Invasive Species Management
Aquatic invasive species (AIS) have a serious impact on the Wheeler Lake fishery and the recreational quality of the lake.
WLA has mitigating an ongoing infestation of Eurasian watermilfoil since 2006. Other AIS of concern are Zebra mussels, purple loosestrife, mystery snails, and rusty crayfish.

WLA Activities
WLA partners with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and the FLOE Counties coordinator to monitor and mitigate Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS), attending regular AIS training sessions, Oconto County Lakes and Waterways Association (OCLAWA) meetings, and the annual Snapshot Day to learn about and identify AIS.
We are mitigating an ongoing infestation of Eurasian watermilfoil since its discovery in the lake in 2006, and are working to prevent introduction of Zebra mussels.
To coordinate these activities, grants, fundraising, and membership dues fund our Lake Management Plan activities. WLA budgets about $30,000 per year for this activity, the largest portion of our budget and our primary fundraising objective.
Annually from 2006 to present, WLA has funded a spring survey to document the location of EWM followed by treatments with herbicide or hand pulling as needed. WLA completed a Lake Management Plan in 2011 and updated the plan in 2021.
At the beginning of November 2024, the Wheeler Lake Association received the 2024 Aquatic Plant Management Summary for Wheeler Lake. The summary details out the following categories:
The ProcellaCOR Treatment Summary
Post Treatment Weather Conditions
The Wheeler Lake DASH Removal Summary
A Map of the Wheeler Lake Sites
The Detailed Diving Activities

WLA has also started a Clean Boats Clean Waters program to educate boaters about invasive species, now staffed with a summer intern, Grace.
